Deciding not to have children was an easy decision for Abby, but it was very difficult to find a doctor who was willing to sterilize her. She told BuzzFeed News that the main reason the doctor said “no” to her was because she was so young that they feared that one day she would change her mind and regret the decision.
Abby is not afraid that she will ever regret having children. She explained: “It is better to regret not having a child than to have one and regret it. If you end up regretting it, I’m the only one who suffers.” She added: “I think a lot of people ignore the fact that sometimes people regret becoming parents. It’s not uncommon, even if it’s taboo, to talk about. I honestly think we should talk about parental regrets more than pretending fatherhood is perfect and charming.” Social pressure to get pregnant hurts everyone, and more dads would probably be helped if we talked about it more .”
Several people on TikTok commented on Abby’s video to congratulate her. One person wrote: “Congratulations! I really want it, but it’s hard to ask how to start the process without everyone freaking out lol.”
Another commented: “I’ll never understand why for them we’re old enough to have kids, get married, and have a 9 to 5 job, but never choose not to have kids. Congratulations!”
One mother wrote: “I am a mother and I want to congratulate you! In the same way that I could choose to have children, you should be able to choose and respectfully not.”
