After the Black Lives Matter movement began, violence against police officers began to skyrocket. But one attack in particular stands out for its brutality. And this officer barely managed to escape with his life.
The three men stabbed Frazier with a box cutter, and then dragged him into the woods. “I had three people on me and I’m not a very big man, and they basically whipped my butt,” Frazier said. The attackers told Frazier that they were going to kill him, but he was able to get one hand free — and he knew exactly what to do.
Frazier didn’t use his free hand to try to fight back. Instead, he pushed a button, which released Lucas, his K9 partner. Lucas is a black Belgian Malinois, and Frazier knew Lucas would not let him down. “I had a button on my belt that I wear, and when I hit the button Lucas jumped out of the car and attacked all three of them and they ran away,” Frazier said. “That’s why he’s my hero.”
Before the fight even started, Lucas already knew something was wrong. “He knew. I could hear him coming,” he recalled. “I couldn’t see anything because the blood was all in my eyes, but I could hear him coming, growling and making these sounds … he sounded like a wolf. I thought, ‘Now he’s gonna get you.’”
