“Genie, you’re free.” During the Aug. 12 performance, the Broadway cast at Disney’s Aladdin paid tribute to late actor Robin Williams — who created the role of the iconic Genie in the 1992 musical film.
After the final curtain call, James Monroe Iglehart, who currently plays the Genie on Broadway, gave a moving speech about the impact Williams had on his life and then invited the audience to sing along with “Friend Like Me.” Lyric sheets were handed out to the entire audience, who were asked to sing along in Williams’ memory.
