Meadows are becoming less and less popular these days. Not only is it high maintenance, it’s terrible for the environment.

Single-crop weeds require a lot of watering, fertilization and weed peeling. Given the growing global water shortage, should we throw clean water on inedible grass?

The lawn also needs gasoline for your lawnmower and business.

Of course, traditional meadows next to agricultural monocrop fields are starving pollinators who once relied on natural prairie grasses, flowers and forests.

Of course, people are looking for alternatives. Some grow edible gardens, others grow prairie grasses and flowers for pollinators, and some grow eco-friendly alfalfa lawns to look similar to regular grass.

And now we’ve found another alternative – creeping red thyme. Like alfalfa, a fast growing cover crop can take up your entire yard like a carpet.

It stays low to the ground, no longer than 3 or 4 inches. It’s tender like alfalfa and strong enough to walk and lie down without dying.

While the creeping variety isn’t as edible as regular thyme, the pleasant scent of lemon attracts people and pollinators and repels mosquitoes.

It is very drought tolerant and should only be watered initially unless you are in an extremely dry climate.

Also, since its roots go deep into the ground, it shouldn’t be fertilized, which is good news for rivers, lakes, and oceans polluted by manure runoff.

And the maintenance-free cover crop creates a thick carpet wherever you plant so you don’t have to weed or use herbicides.

Bonus – long-lasting flowers paint your garden a lovely shade of lavender pink for most of the year.

You can plant them in slices if you want variety.
